This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher educator and educational leader to join a thriving and highly respected team at one of the UK’s most distinctive universities.

Our Initial Teacher Education programmes are rooted in research excellence, creativity, critical thinking, inclusion and social justice. We work with a wide network of schools across London and beyond, helping new teachers develop the knowledge, confidence and professional judgement needed to thrive in today’s classrooms.

The Subject of Education is one of the largest and most successful academic areas within the School of Mind, Body and Society. Alongside our substantial Primary and Secondary PGCE provision, we support a vibrant doctoral community, internationally recognised research activity, a successful BA Education programme, and a growing range of postgraduate courses.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping and supporting our Initial Teacher Education provision during an important period of development. Working closely with an experienced and committed team, they will contribute to programme leadership, partnership development, mentor support, school visits, quality assurance and Ofsted preparation.

We are looking for someone who combines strategic leadership with a deep understanding of teaching, learning and professional development. The role would suit an experienced teacher educator who is passionate about supporting the next generation of teachers and committed to educational excellence.

  • Why Creative Writing Together Matters, A £1m Research Project for Families, Schools and Communities

    I am delighted to share that Professor Tom Dobson and I, working with an exceptional interdisciplinary team, have secured close to £1 million in funding for a three year research project, Creative Writing Together. This major award supports an ambitious investigation into how creative writing can strengthen relationships between children, parents, teachers and communities, and enhance wellbeing across educational settings.

    At a time when schools and families are facing rising mental health challenges, increasing absence and deepening inequalities, we are asking a simple but powerful question. What if creative writing were treated not as an optional enrichment activity, but as a relational practice that helps people understand themselves and one another more deeply?

    The project centres on the concept of reflective functioning, the capacity to make sense of behaviour in terms of thoughts, feelings and intentions. Strong reflective functioning is associated with secure attachment, improved relationships and emotional regulation. Yet creative writing has rarely been studied as a preventative, community based approach to developing these capacities.

    Over three years, we will run eight week programmes in schools and community centres in London and York, bringing families and teachers together to write collaboratively. Combining action research, psychological measures and close analysis of participants’ writing, we aim to generate robust evidence and practical resources that can inform policy and practice.

    Creative Writing Together positions writing as a shared, transformative act. In a fragmented educational landscape, it offers a hopeful vision of creativity as connection.

  • Two New Roles on the AHRC Creative Writing Together Project at Goldsmiths

    I’m delighted to be recruiting for two roles on our AHRC funded Creative Writing Together project at Goldsmiths, University of London. The project explores how creative writing can support reflection, wellbeing, and dialogue across generations, working with schools, community groups, and writers across London. We are looking for a Research Assistant (.5 FTE) and a Short Courses and Training Officer (.2 FTE) to join the team from 1 May 2026 to 30 April 2029.   • Guerrilla CPD: Why Research-Informed Teacher Collaboration is the Future

    I co-wrote “Guerrilla CPD” with Debbie Bogard to shine a light on the power of informal, grassroots teacher development. Debbie is a brilliant, research-informed practitioner working in Further Education, and collaborating with her was both inspiring and energising. Together, we drew on our shared belief that CPD works best when it emerges organically—through dialogue, creativity, and mutual respect—not when it’s imposed from above.

    Our article explores how we developed a playful, teacher-led CPD programme during the pandemic, rooted in the radical pedagogies of Freire, hooks, and Fanon. It was a time of crisis, but also one of possibility. We found that when teachers are given space to reflect, write, share ideas, and challenge dominant norms—particularly around curriculum content and delivery—something transformative can happen.

    Working with Debbie reminded me that the future of professional development lies in collaboration between FE and HE, between practice and theory, and between colleagues who trust and challenge each other. In a profession increasingly shaped by surveillance and accountability metrics, these kinds of informal, friendship-driven partnerships may be our best hope for genuine change.
